  • Denver is a cooler dinosaur. He skateboards and wears sunglasses.

  • I think you're overreacting. These issues will likely be resolved quickly. And I thought the new web interface was pretty cool. Nice to have easy access to Web Gallery without being at home to run my copy of iPhoto. The mail interface looks basically identical to the old one. And come on, push is cool.
  • I understand you entirely. These are indeed difficult systems to calculate, but I don't understand why you seem to think they will always be beyond comprehension. Assuming the human race has enough time, I think we will eventually solve any and all mysteries of the Universe. Weather, though extremely complex, is still a…

  • If there is such a thing as a soul, if it is a real and tangible aspect of a living being, then it can probably be replicated artificially (as it stands, we can create artificial body parts like limbs and hearts, and development is underway to create artificial blood cells, so why shouldn't we be able to replicate other…

  • When the Titanic sank, did we stop building ships? Of course not! We made them lighter, faster, more efficient, and built numerous systems to overcome the old design's shortcomings. I can only assume a virtual universe would be tested extensively in public beta before rolling out the retail version. Do you think the fact…

  • You seriously think there are aspects of the Universe that we can never understand? And that weather and animal instincts are among them? Not really sure how to respond to that. But even if you think these things are unsolvable, such things could probably be approximated to the point where we wouldn't notice the…

  • But that's exactly the point I'm trying to make. Technology will continue to improve, possibly indefinitely. It's conceivable that we could eventually simulate the real world on a computer, at which point there would be no discernible differences at all. In theory, medical technology will also continue to improve. If you…

  • That would be novel, but once you can make an entire universe virtually, what's the point in worrying about the "real" thing? It's an old philosophical argument that if we were in a world that wasn't real, but we couldn't discern it from the real thing, then it basically is the real thing. I hate to keep bringing it up,…

  • Ah, so you're curious as to how you would perceive the digital transfer? Without knowing the procedure involved I couldn't say for certain, but I'd wager that the original body would have to be shut off (killed) to even access the brain deeply enough to obtain its data. We don't have the fancy back-of-the-neck Matrix plug…

  • If you lived forever and were able to endlessly regenerate, wouldn't you never forget anything? Your immortal brain's healing ability would forever retain any and all information. That may sound great at first, but your brain is a finite thing, and has finite space to store information. What happens when your brain runs…

  • I guess this all depends on a definition of the self, and the existence of the soul. Are we a product of our thoughts, memories and experiences, or is there an intangible aspect to ourselves independent of our brainwaves? It's an interesting question to ask, because when (not if) we figure out how to copy the entirety of a…

  • Whereas in the world suggested above, we'd have adults without the benefit of past generations to raise them correctly, to teach them language and culture and what is right and wrong. We'd have people with million year-old bodies and minds of children, or more likely, minds of savage uneducated wildmen. Civilization would…

  • This is the most horrific future I've ever seen depicted. A race of immortal parentless children? They'd be undomesticated! They wouldn't be housebroken! Is that the future you want?!? I'll just download my consciousness to a secured server with a few offsite backups and avoid the horrible dystopian superkid society…

  • Absolutely I think it's possible. More importantly, if we ever get a virtual world of Matrix-level quality, I'll be first in line to download my consciousness.

  • Wouldn't a race of immortals eventually use up every resource of the planet, grey goo-style? Or is immortality somehow limited to only a select few?

  • Well I wouldn't pay for it again. I'd eat it if someone bought it for me.

  • Stealing my computer?
  • It was actually a reply to Geoff. And I would never make Geoff post rickrolls! It's much more fun to get him to click rickrolls.
  • Oh no, not post moderation! Hey hypernoob, I can post as you. Just sayin'.
  • Geoff said it, not me. You all saw it.

  • That is a sweet ride. Good luck! Pop some wheelies during your test drive, just to make sure everything works the way it should.

  • I think the problem there is, no one would recognize the costume. If you're at a nerdular nerdence convention and have to explain your costume, you're doing it wrong.
  • Geoff, she's onto you! Cheese it!!!
