Spiderman 3: Emo edition

(SPOILER ALERT FOR ENTIRE MOVIE)

SOOOOO.... illithid and I just got back from the midnight showing of Spiderman 3. Anyone else make their way to see it?

My thoughts:
The theme song for the movie could definitely be "Crawling" by Linkin Park. Joking aside, the birth of Sandman was just beautiful. That was easily my favorite part of the movie.

And, random citizens have an annoying habit of standing UNDERNEATH epic battle scenes.

Any other thoughts?

There's a lot of little quibbles I had with their adaptation of the comic books, but I'll skip those.

On to the movie. I don't like how they made Peter's symbiote a costume instead of a symbiote. It took away from the invasiveness of his condition. Also, I didn't care for the humorous treatment of the symbiote taking over. It took away from the horror of the situation, I think.

Was it really necessary to have Spider-Man swing in front of a GIGANTIC American flag? Patriotism wasn't even a theme in the movie. And since when did Spider-Man become a national hero? I don't think superheroes should ever strictly ally themselves with a specific country. Many problems are global.

I like what they did with Venom. Looked cool, sounded cool. A few small things I didn't like, but nothing major. He was fierce like Venom was meant to be fierce. And I agree with Serephel, birth of the Sandman was awesome.

I like how everything got the Deus Ex Machina treatment. Oh wait, that's what I hated. What I liked was how Peter acted like he was from the 70's because the original Symbiote meteors landed in the 70's, according to that wierd proffessor, wait, I hated that too.

At least Venom was cool. But Brock was a little bitch.

    Also, wtf sand DNA?

I really liked it. The occasional emoness didn't bother me much and I don't think there was that much deus ex machina. Except maybe against Venom, but apparently the symbiote's actually weak against that kind of thing, so I blame Stan Lee. I think Sandman may have been my favorite character.

Sandman should go back to 1955 Hill Valley where he belongs.

Why did they spend two hours introducing villians? Really, this movie had serious problems of development...

Not to mention the all knowing butler, with the knowledge in forensic science to know which blade caused a wound. I hated that guy so much.

I agree. WHERE THE FUCK WERE YOU TWO MOVIES AGO WHEN THIS KNOWLEDGE WOULD HAVE HELPED

If this movie was a porno, that would have been the money shot.

I heard Topher Grace had to eat a lot of candy for his role.

The movie seemed to be on a downward spiral. I mean, it was ok in the beginning, but it just got progressively worse, since the ending annoyed the crap out of me. I mean, seriously, "I'm Sandman, I'm going away forever now." So many little things bugged the crap out of me, and it's the kind of movie where you want to let every little thing slide, because you think there'll be a moment of pure awesomeness at the end which'll let it all go. But, I found myself saying "Aww, don't do that, that's stupid" more often than not at the major parts. They left out a lot of the cool stuff the black suit could do. Instead of showing off everything cool about it, and how it progressively turned him into a badguy, they just threw it in there, and said "Oh, he's bad now."

It was a real dissapointment, but, luckily, I didn't pay for my ticket. So it's all good on my part.

I think you guys take this movie too seriously. I went in with absolutely zero expectations, and loved the movie! I mean, I don't think it's the best movie ever; not even the best action movie ever, but it sure was entertaining!

    Also, J.J. is funnay.

Oh yeah, I forgot about that part. I think I was still reeling from the awesomeness of French Bruce Campbell.

I've seen some of the previews, but most likely, I'm not going to see it in theaters. I didn't for the other two films, heh. I read somewhere they weren't originally going to include Venom. This movie has got me interested in reading some of my older comics though.

I was rereading Maximum Carnage. This particular panel stuck out to me and I wanted to share it. :D

The general feeling I had from the movie was that they had a fully complete, detailed story based on the comic and just removed half of those details at random. Like how they made the symbiote just be a regular costume until he tries to peel it off in the bell-tower. I was expecting it, but it was like, "what the hell, when did it change from being a costume to something that can heal itself?" I also loved Sandman, but for this movie, they should have left him out, cast that same guy as Eddie Brock and used all of the Sandman scenes that were meant to show how evil the black suit was, to show Peter having a real struggle with the suit, or even used that time to show him studying it with the Lizzard more. The only thing that actually pissed me off was that Venom was just Brock with the symbiote's power. There was no "we" or anything.

There will be a "we" when you FIX THIS DAMN DOOR!

I made you cookies! I can make cookies with nuts, too!

Emopeter had her wrapped around his little finger, feeding him cookies while he was on the phone. That was awesome.

My favorite symbiote art is drawn by Clayton Craine...

Vemon and Carnage look so totally badass the way he draws them.

i still haven't seen it yet, but i hear mary jane sings and spidey dances and plays piano. add that to my laundry list of complaints about the last two, and the biggest redeeming factors are still Bruce Campbell's camio and the fact that Sam Raimi will have to try much harder to taint my opinion of him. he can make pure crap, and he's still awesome because of Army of Darkness and Evil Dead II.

I just watched Spider-Man 2, and it was so much better than 3. Doc Ock, with like...maybe a half hour of screen time, is ten times better than New Goblin, Sandman, and Venom combined.
  • edited May 2007
Venom could have been cooler than all of them if they had given him more of an opportunity.

And not cast skinny ass Topher Grace as Eddie Brock. If they had cast, say, Gilbert Gottfried as Venom, then Venom would have been unarguably the BEST villain ever.

I feel stupid now! I really really enjoyed the movie! Maybe it is because I never read the comics, I just used to watch the animated series when I was younger... You guys make me feel like I'm not being critic enough. Also, it was just one second that the flag was there! And also also, who the hell kisses another girl with their girlfriend standing right in front of them? Also also also, I do agree on that butler being the stupidest thing since the e-reader.
  • edited May 2007
Hey, don't hate on the e-reader! There were some really awesome Mario 3 add-on levels!

They should have left Venom out until the very end. The whole movie should have been about the symbiote. Also, since they killed him off already, was that supposed to be HobGoblin when Harry was helping Peter? He had the face scar and all. It was tough to tell since he never had any real goblin costume at all. Though, the sword was pretty kick-ass.

I thoroughly enjoyed this movie, for all the wrong reasons. When Spiderman turned emo I nearly fell out of my seat laughing.

Basically I knew the movie was going to be bad, but that 70's funk-emo patrol had me rolling in the aisles. And when Mary-Jane was dumping him on that bridge, I nearly died. The boy couldn't fake cry if his life depended on it: He was all "This scene must end now, before I damage my future acting career any more".

Plus the casting of the weedy dude from that 70's show as Brock was a baffling decision, I mean he has plenty of spite etc to feed off, but the symbiote can only enhance a person's strength so much, some of it would have to be theirs.

The butler helped promote the theory that all butlers are evil though. "I've known how your father died all along, now that you've trashed your friendships, your life in general and your face I will reveal that fact".
  • edited May 2007
The butler is what we like to call a "plot device."
  • edited May 2007
    A laughably clumsy one.
  • edited May 2007
Even if the butler could tell what caused the fatal wounds, how the hell does he know it still wasn't Spider-Man's fault? He could have thrown the glider at the Green Goblin, just like he threw the pumpkin bomb at Harry. Was the creepy butler lurking around and watching the fight?
  • edited May 2007
    yes.
  • edited May 2007
    So... a butler did it?
  • edited May 2007
Now, I hear all butlers are trained in advanced forensic medicine for the express purpose of diagnosing their master's causes of death.
